Yoga in Action 2012 Session!

Take your practice off the mat and create positive change! If you are a yoga student, yoga teacher, or activist of any kind, this program is for you. This 7 session program was created by Off the Mat Into the World, a national non-profit that uses the power of yoga to inspire conscious, sustainable activism and to ignite grassroots social change.

The Birmingham Yoga in Action Group is led by Ambassadors Melissa Scott, Shannon Andrews Skipper, and Jasper Elliott Wolfe. This will be our third group in Birmingham and in order to make it a little easier to fit into our busy schedules we have spaced the sessions 3 weeks apart. We will meet once a month from 12:30pm to 4:30pm @ Villager Yoga in Cahaba Heights. Each workshop will be based on that sessions theme and will include a one hour yoga class, group experiential exercises, meditation, kirtan, journaling, and discussion. This is a very powerful program and it's goal is to help you awaken to your authentic purpose, to develop tools and practices to bring your purpose into action, to cultivate long term community support so that we can live a purposeful life, and make a difference in our families, communities, and world.

You will walk away from this training more grounded in who you are and who you are becoming. You will feel more confident going out into your community and being of service. At the end of the program, we will work together on a group seva project that will support an existing organization in our community.

Our First Group Seva Projects!

Yoga in Action Birmingham's first group of participants finished their leadership training in November 2010. They were excited to get to work on their first Seva Project! The group chose to support the Salvation Army Angel Program. Each participant adopted a child and collected clothing and a toy for that child. They met over brunch and brought all their goodies to be bagged up and taken to the Salvation Army. The group got a lot of joy out of this simple and easy Seva Project. During this meeting they discussed ideas for a second project.

Below are pics from the group's last meeting. They had dinner together and are continuing to offer each other friendship and support in their personal endeavors. They are discussing ways in which they can continue working together while keeping their activisim joyful and sustainable!

The group continue to meet regularly to discuss new Seva Projects and support each other. We're so inspired by this amazing group of yogi activists! We can't wait to see what they'll do next!

YIA Workshop for Alabama Possible

On Saturday, August 14th, YIA B'ham hosted a workshop for Alabama Poverty Project's (APP) Alabama Possible campaign. APP works to educate about and eradicate poverty in the state of Alabama. And their Director, Kristina Scott, is a yogi and friend of YIA B'ham! Find out more about APP and Alabama Possible here: http://alabamapossible.org/

The workshop was a huge success. Lots of yogis came for two hours of asana, meditation, music, and community. It was a great day full of lots of karma yoga.

Check out a few of our pics:
